Booster Award
The BIP Booster Award is presented for outstanding contributions to the Palmer Township community by the person who has exhibited service to others. This year, we are recognizing David Carr for the Palmer Beautification Project.
Although Mr. Carr was adamant about this award focusing on the project and not on himself, I feel one is required to honor the other. And I’ll tell you why.
Mr. Carr is an avid bike rider and frequently rides on the bike path where he noticed on those rides that his surroundings were far from beautiful. In a world where it is easy to look away, Mr. Carr chose to do something about it. He approached the Board of Supervisors for permission to take on a long term project; what started out as picking up litter has turned into an environmental facelift. Where trash and weeds once took over the sides of the bike path, there is an evolving transformation to flowers and shrubs.
Using his years of gardening as his guide, Mr. Carr has been focusing on the area between Fairview Park and Sheridan Drive, cleaning, raking and preparing for planting. He has over 500 daffodil bulbs to transplant and will be growing more at his home to transplant in the future. It is backbreaking work, but he states that it is worth doing.
“Look what we can do”. There have been other volunteers following in his footsteps; a Girl Scout troop, an Army veteran, families who live along the bike path, the New Creation UCC Church has offered to perpetually maintain the 100 yards behind their church, and the Children’s Home of Easton. There were 5 children from the Home along with their supervisor who were volunteering – when Mr. Carr asked the supervisor why she was doing the dirty work, she said because like you I am modeling for these children; setting a good example for all to follow.
The Palmer Beautification Project is something all of us can get involved in. There is no monetary commitment, there are no dues, and all that is needed is a desire to make Palmer Beautiful. “Adopt a plant”, donate a shrub or meet Dave on the bike path to help pick up litter.
The greatest compliment is to honor the project and that is our message tonight. Thank you David Carr.
Below is one example of the improvement made in the Bike Path under Dave's leadership.
